Lindsay from The Flynnigans

I love meeting new bloggers and Lindsay from The Flynnigans is no exception. She won an ad on my blog from a giveaway and it's been fun to get to know her. So, I though you should get to know her, too!

Blog // Twitter // Instagram // Pinterest // Facebook // Google Plus
How did you come up with the name to your blog?
The Flynnigans is a bit of a spin of my last name.  A few of my husband’s friends call us The Flynnigans and it’s catchy, so that’s why it has stuck with us.

Why did you begin to blog?
I’ve been writing and blogging for years.  Initially, I started a private blog where my then-boyfriend, now husband used to correspond back and forth when we first started dating and he was on rotating shifts.  Then it evolved to my creating another space where I could just “spill my guts” and put it all down on “paper”.  It was only this past January 2015 that my husband purchased me my own domain and I migrated over to Wordpress.  Since then, I’ve met a wonderful community of people that teach me new things daily, that support me and uplift when I need it and it is a space that I’m proud of and love to connect with people from all over the world.  I just love to share my love of pictures and my fondness for animals and pets with others.

What is your blog's mission or goal?
I guess my goal would be to continue inspiring people to appreciate the little things in life.  Life isn’t always unicorns and rainbows but I firmly believe that there is always something that we can be grateful for, to learn from and to find joy in.

What is the best thing about blogging for you?
Connecting with other animal lovers.  I’m such a diehard animal lover.  I just love this whole blogging community in general.  There are so many wonderful and supportive people out there.

What is the hardest/worst thing about blogging for you?
Time Management.  I find it very difficult trying to balance everything, but I’m learning to let it go and when I have time to post, I post.  If I don’t, roll it off my back and shrug it off.  There are only so many hours in the day…

What are 3 of your favorite posts you've written?
I have four:

Besides blogging, what are some other hobbies of yours?
Traveling, SCUBA diving, photography, hiking, spending time with my husband and two dogs, meeting new people.

What is your favorite thing about the month of November?
November is bittersweet for me.  It is the month that my father died (29 years ago) and it also is my birthday.

Do you have any exciting plans for the holidays?
I plan to spend as much time with family as possible.  My mother in law isn’t well, so it’s important that we spend any and all time with her.

Brooklyn Jolley

**Don't forget about my 6th blogiversary giveaway!

Do you any women that just exude the Spirit of God and His character traits: loving, charity, humble, happy, hopeful? Well, I do. Her name is Brooklyn Jolley and she is a beautiful soul within a beautiful body. Brooklyn and I met through blogging and became good friends. she also cut my hair earlier this year. I've loved reading her blog and getting to know her on a better level. And, this month, she won a free sponsorship for my blog! So, I want to officially introduce you to Brooklyn Jolley!

I'm Brooklyn Jolley. On my blog I write about my faith, Disneyland, fashion, marriage and self love. I drive like a grandma, I almost always sneeze 3 times, and I'm always thinking about what I'd be doing/eating if I was in Disneyland at that moment. It is one of my happy places. I'm a Mormon, a Christ-follower, and a believer in personal meditation, yoga, prayer, Netflix marathons, and self-care. You can't take care of others unless you're taking good care of yourself.

How did you come up with the name to your blog?
I used to be A Little Too Jolley and the reason was because I grew up having everyone tell me I always seemed a little too happy. When I married into the last name Jolley it seemed like a good fit! Now I'm going by just my name to reflect my blog a little more personally but the URL is still under the old name.

What is your blog's mission or goal?
This is something I am actually working on figuring out right now! I know one of my main goals is to remind women that they are important and worth it. Everyone can make a difference! Along with that, I'm hoping to start sharing some simple ways to make a difference and be a little more service focused. Overall, my blog is my creative outlet. I don't sew, cook well, draw or create beautiful graphics, but I love to write. I love to share the things that are important to me.

What is the biggest lesson you've learned while blogging?
You are not the opinion of someone who doesn't know you. I've had my fair share of naysayers and stepped down from my blog for almost 4 months last year to decide if it was even worth it. I've decided it's MY story to share and cyber-bullying will not stop me!

What is the best thing about blogging for you?
The relationships I've gained from blogging, including meeting my husband! Him and I were set up on a blind date by a blogging friend whom I had never met in real life. 8 months later we were engaged and we've been married for over 2 years now. I'm still so grateful for that!

What are 3 of your favorite posts you've written?

She Got an iPhone for Valentine's Day and I Didn't Get a Thing: http://alittletoojolley.blogspot.com/2015/07/she-got-iphone-for-valentines-day-i.html

Besides blogging, what are some other hobbies of yours?
I love cuddling with my puppies, watching Disney movies, making hot chocolate, reading and doing yoga!

You are obsessed with Disneyland...why?
Disneyland is a very nostalgic place for me. I grew up going once a year with my family, and I have some amazing memories with my family there. Disneyland is one of the few places in the world where I can actually forget about all the stresses and worrying at home, and just enjoy. I love going because the rides are fun, the park is clean, and it is a really inspiring place for me. I have written lots about Disneyland on my blog, you can find all those posts here: http://alittletoojolley.blogspot.com/p/disney.html

Who are three people in your life that inspire you?
My husband is always inspiring me in so many ways. He encourages me in all my dreams, and chases after his own.

My Mom and Dad are my biggest examples. My mom is the best. She is always putting others first and is constantly looking for ways to serve. My Dad serves as a bishop for my church and gives so much of his time to the Lord on top of his full time job. He's always inspired me to give my all to my faith!

I'm also inspired by Walt Disney! I recently watched the PBS Walt Disney documentary, and it is refreshing to realize that Walt Disney wasn't perfect. He declared bankruptcy, went through phases of his employees hating him, and lost best friends because of the industry he was in, yet he still chased his dreams and made a difference! He used his talents to change the world.

Go and say hi to Brooklyn!

Random Writings of Rachel

One of the most creatively unique and uniquely creative bloggers I have met is Rachel from Random Writings of Rachel. She is a licensed hairstylist who hated cosmotology school, grew up in Malaysia with a big family, married a Mexican nurse, names her cats medicinal titles, and has lived in Michigan, China, and Malaysia with her husband, speaking English, Spanish, Chinese, and Malay at home! Crazy life! But she's so fun to read! Rachel has sponsored my blog this past month, so I thought you should get to know her better!

How did you come up with the name to your blog?
I actually named my blog after the book of short stories I published when I was 18. And...my dad was the one who came up with the name for my book...therefore, my dad named my blog. In recent times I've begun to minimize the {of Rachel} part of the name, because The Random Writings is all that would fit in my url, anyways.

What is your blog's mission or goal?
I'm not sure I have one cohesive mission (hence the Random in the title), but I do have some big passions and dreams that I want to accomplish through my writing. I want to make "the other side of the world" seem more real to those who don't live in it. I want to write true stories about all those non-famous and yet incredibly important people who wouldn't ever be written about if it weren't for me: people like Robert and my Auntie Letchimi. I also just love to make people laugh and bring a spice of joy into lives that might occasionally seem humdrum.

In addition, freedom to live uninhibited by peer pressure is extremely important to me, and I hope that comes through in my writing. I always want to encourage people who feel uncomfortable in a box to have a the courage they need to get out of it.

What is the best thing about blogging for you?
Writing. Before blogging, I sent page-long emails about my adventures to my parents nearly everyday. Now I have a slightly wider audience for my adventures.

What are 3 of your favorite posts you've written?
It's hard to choose!

First, there's this post, which proves that I shouldn't be allowed to write tutorials of any kind:
How to Become Pinterest-Famous

More than once, my dreams have inspired my blog posts. Once, a dream about polar bears and hyenas inspired a blog post.

And there's always the completely humble post about 10 Reasons Why I'm An Awesome Blogger.

Besides blogging, what are some other hobbies of yours?
I love sewing, but don't currently have a sewing machine. Hopefully that lack will be remedied soon. I also enjoy embroidery--but not crocheting or knitting. Apparently I'm strictly a thread girl, no yarn included.
I also have a secret, mostly un-indulged love for building models (cars, airplanes, buildings, whatever), because that's too impractical. I don't want to keep models, I just like building them.

Where do you live and why did you and your husband chose to live there?
As of summer 2015, we live in Malaysia, and will continue to be here for the foreseeable future. There are many reasons why we chose to make this move. We loved living in China, but when Angel was offered a job here, we decided to accept. We wanted to be closer to my family, as we hope that our future children will get a better chance to interact with their grandparents and aunts. English as a Second Language education is a passion for me because of how needed it is here--good foreign language skills are often a ticket to higher education and can be a way out of poverty for many. I love where we are now because I feel it's a community where our skills and passions can really be used to improve lives. I have no desire to live for myself, but being integrated into the loving, tight-knit community here is so rewarding, I feel like I wouldn't have it any other way.

How have you grown from your East and Southeast Asian experiences?
Living in Asia has certainly changed me for the better. Because of my experiences here, I don't talk about human trafficking or abuse of domestic workers as far-off, distant things. They're real, they happen to people I know, and the world we live in has a lot of changing to do. I'm more passionate about life because the people around me here have such passion.

What are three adjectives people typically use to describe you?
I swear, I should figure out how to do a scientific word search of the comments on my blog and figure out what three adjectives are used most. But I have no idea how to do that. Here are my guesses:
Random
Colorful
Cute (it's the curly hair, I swear. Everyone will call you cute if you have curls.)

What are three things on your bucket list?
This was by far the hardest question, apparently I'm not good at bucket lists:
Visit Tokyo Disney Resort.
Own a sewing machine {again} and design my own clothes.
Plan a wedding for somebody--probably for one of my five sisters, except most of my sisters say they'll probably elope.

So, what do you think of Rachel? Make sure to check out her site and say, "Hello!"

3 Books I Recommend // My Little Sunshines

Hello, hello! I'm Britt and I blog over at My Little Sunshines. I'm thrilled to be posting for Tayler today, and I hope you enjoy what I share with you. Just a little about me, I'm 26, I've been married to Kyle for 5.5 years, we have an 18 month old son named Abe, and I'm 36 weeks along with a baby girl! I graduated from BYU in 2011 with a degree in Human Development, and I currently am able to stay at home, which I love! I love the fall, all things organizational, reading, writing, and of course, watching Netflix while eating all the carbs ;)
As I said above, I love to read. So today I thought I'd share three of my favorite fictional books to recommend to others with you! It's really hard to narrow my list down to just three (I think I have about 100 on my good-reads shelf!) but I did it. I tried to pick out more "obscure" books, not the ones that every one recommends, because I'm sure you've heard of them or read them before, (I'm talking about books such as Harry Potter, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, other classics, etc. --- although those are all great books, too!) So, let's get started!

1 | The Art of Racing in the Rain
This is one that I read a few years ago, and I instantly fell in love with it. I immediately bought a copy and read it again, although I'm definitely due for a re-read now. The premise sounds strange enough -- it's told from a dog's point of view. I will be the first to tell you that I'm not an animal person at all, and generally try to stay away from any "pet books", but this one... well, I'm so glad I read it. Enzo is a very smart dog who knows he's going to die soon, and as he looks back on his life, the story of his owner Denny, a race car driver, emerges and we're brought into a tale of his life. Beauty, heartbreak, family, loyalty, betrayal, and all other human experiences are present as Enzo tells this story. I highly recommend it. (Full disclosure: It's been a few years since I have read the book, but I believe there were a few swear words and one or two scenes of intimacy.)

2 | The Thirteenth Tale
This book was recommended to me by my mother-in-law, and I wasn't sure about it to begin with. However, once I had read the first couple of chapters, I was hooked. The author weaves an amazing story through both the past and present, and the ending is fantastic. If you're a fan of books such as Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, you should definitely pick this one up. There are multiple similarities -- on purpose -- but it's told in a more "modern" setting. I can't say much more without giving anything away, but I can't say enough good things about it. It's one of my all time favorites. (I don't believe there was anything inappropriate in this book.)

3 | The Kitchen House
This one's for all the historical fiction lovers out there. It's a vivid representation of the dynamics between slave owners and slaves in the South, but also brings in a third layer, which is that of Irish indentured servants. Told over the course of years, I couldn't put this book down. It was raw, emotional, and well written and gave me such a better sense of what life would have been like back then. (Common scenes from those days including rape and other cruelty towards slaves are present, but not explicitly that I recall.)
So there you have it, 3 books I highly recommend. If you've read any of them, I'd love to know what you think! Or if you end up picking them up, let me know after you've read them. I'm always up to talking about books, so feel free to follow or friend me on goodreads, too!

Faith From Life With Mrs. G. and the Artist

I'm super excited to introduce you to another wonderful Peony Project friend of mine: Faith!

Blog // Facebook // Twitter // Pinterest // Instagram

Faith blogs at Life With Mrs. G and the Artist. She talks about married life, religion, insecurities, and her daily life and daily favorites! She has also created such a fun vlogging link up that I participate in: The Golden Vlog.

She is one of my amazing sponsors this month, so I thought you'd like to get to know her better!

How did you come up with the name to your blog?
Actually my blog used to be named something else but when I recently did the rebrand I also renamed it. Life w/ Mrs G & the Artist is a little play on our name and the many talents of my husband. I blog about our life more than anything else. Our name is Golden and the Artist part is because my husband is an artist. He draws and paints and does just about anything he sets his mind to.

What is your blog's mission or goal?
When I re-branded I decided that I wanted my blog to be more of a community for women in all areas of life to be inspired and encouraged. So that's what I've been trying to do. :) I love making connections with people.

What is the best thing about blogging for you?
Community!! I've said it time and time again, there is nothing like the community of blogging. These ladies are so willing to help and encourage and it's so refreshing to have that. Especially for people that don't have a lot of that in their every day life. It's a blessing for sure.

How has blogging made you a better Christian?
Well, for me blogging has helped me be a better Christian because you have to live it in front of your readers. They don't see you or really even hear you. So you have to display the love of Jesus through what you are writing and it can sometimes be difficult but so rewarding when you touch someone heart with what the Lord has given you to say.

Besides blogging, what are some other hobbies of yours?
Well, I love to read!! I read pretty much anything and everything I can get my hands on but I love fiction. Give me a good romance or mystery and I'm in heaven. I love singing in church. I teach a group of ladies sign language/interpretive drama and that is a passion of mine. It's amazing to see the Lord work through that ministry.

What is your favorite summer time activity?
Ummm...I love bike riding. Actual bikes and motorcycles. Really just hanging with my husband and friends outside somewhere is always good too. I like going to the pool with my babies. I like to be outside in the summer.

What are 3 of your favorite posts you've written?
Ohhh, this is a hard one. I always love writing about marriage and I think one of my favorite in that category would be either my post on the 5 ways to earn your husbands trust or things your husband needs to hear. I also like writing about blogging and what has helped me as a blogger to the pet peeves. One of the hard ones to write was when I wrote about abandonment and it's effects but I was glad I did. It seemed to really touch and speak to a lot of people. I always loved giving my testimony on the blog. It was a special day. Sorry .. that's more than 3. ha!

Desiree from Macke Monologues

Hi Morrell Tale readers!

I'm Desirée and I blog over at Macke Monologues.

On any given day you can find me posting about life as a domestic engineer (or as most call it, SAHM). My three year old, Marcus keeps me on my toes, so we are always on the look out for new adventures. To add to our family fun, we are expecting our second child - a little girl! - August 14. The weeks are fleeting, and our family dynamic will certainly change when the little lady arrives.

Over at Macke Monologues I love to post new recipes (this Chicken Fried Rice is a family favorite), occasionally I'll write about my love of running, but most days I post about my little man and all that we do to keep our days busy. Some of my favorite daily posts are about life currently. To get a quick glimpse of life I thought I'd share that with the Morrell Tale Readers today.

Currently I am…

Thinking about :: just how fast this summer has gone, and our Bucket List of things to do. Marcus and I have really made the most out of last few months together as Marcus and Mommy. I'm hoping we can complete all the items on our List before the baby arrives.
Do you have seasonal bucket lists? If so, I'd love to hear what fun things you do!

Working on :: finishing up the nursery for our little lady. We just have to hang curtain rods and curtains and the room will be complete. Here's just a peek at the room. I'll be sharing a full reveal as soon as I'm sure the room is totally finished.

Prints are from TheDigitalStudio.
Oval frames are from primitivepincushion.
Rectangle frames are from ThePaintedLdy.
Reading :: The Garden on Sunset by Martin Turnbull. Most of the books I've read as of late have been thanks to suggestions from BookBub. Many books are at ridiculously reduced prices, sometimes they are even free! I've also noticed many of the books are by up and coming authors, so the books and authors aren't as well known, and I love supporting those authors.

Are you reading anything you can't put down? Let me know! I love adding to my ever growing must-read list.

Listening to :: Marcus is completely obsessed with the Luke Bryan song, "Kick the Dust Up." That's pretty much on repeat right now.

Eating :: watermelon and popsicles all the livelong day. Summer heat plus pregnancy cravings at their finest!

Watching :: my husband and I are HGTV addicts. Fixer Upper, Flip or Flop, Love It or List It, and Property Brothers are among our favorites. Maybe someday we'll actually have the courage to try a few at-home renovations of our own.

Wanting :: a backyard. We live in a townhome and our small back patio just doesn't cut it. I'd love to let me kids loose in a big grassy yard complete with a swing set and sandbox.

Feeling :: pretty big and tired these days. At 36 weeks pregnant that tends to happen.

Loving :: all the bows and headbands! I just received some adorable headbands for our little lady and I'm certain a girl can never have too many.

bow/headband
Do you have a favorite bow and headband shop? If so, I'd love to hear about it!

Thankful for :: these two and the little miss we'll be meeting soon. They're pretty awesome and make my world go 'round.

So tell me, what's going on in your world, currently?
Thanks to Tayler for allowing me to take over. Feel free to swing by Macke Monologues and say hi, I'd love to hear from you!

Summer Bucket List with Emilie Burke

I've given myself a few weeks to start to transition into being a SAHM. Now that I'm starting getting it down (no where near to having it down) and beginning to get into a rhythm, and since school is out, I've been thinking about things to do this summer. (And the 100* weather hasn't helped either.) So, I got together with Emilie Burke to create a Summer Bucket List!

A combination of adventures and local fun to be done during summer!

Emilie:
New Years isn't the only time of year to make a list of things to do! The summertime is a perfect season to try new things, to open yourself to unforgettable experiences! Here's a few things on my Summer Bucket List:

1. Music Festivals
Summer isn't complete without a soundtrack! Wouldn't it be great to see that "soundtrack" live? You could go to one, or two, or seven! Music is a never ending pleasure! Live music is always so exciting. Who are you looking forward to seeing life?

2. Parasailing!
I’ve actually been parasailing with my younger sister. It was one of the most beautiful, life-changing experience I’ve ever had. This is something you need to be doing this summer. Take advantage of the good weather and get outside.

3. Ziplining
I’m really lucky to have been ziplining, too, and it is an exhilarating experience. There is something freeing about being completely out of control and so in touch with life at the same time.

4. Snorkeling
My younger sister recently went snorkeling and I’ve been hearing about it ever since. I know that this is something I need to do. You can read about her here: http://thewaysoflaura.tumblr.com/post/118915946745/join-me-in-key-west-today-i-got-to-go#notes

5. Swimming with Dolphins!
Who wouldn't want to swim with a dolphin? Those cute, sweet animals! This summer is about doing things out of the ordinary! Swimming with a dolphin is definitely not ordinary!

Five fun filled events that I've always wanted to do during the summer! Doing things as normal as a music festival to swimming with a dolphin is what I call a summer to never fo
rget!

Tayler:
I would love to join Emilie on all those adventures. Sadly, we have an almost 1 year old, and a husband who doesn't get a summer break because he's a big, adult boy with a big, adult boy job (and he's saving up all his PTO for our family reunion at the end of July). So, I'll give you some local summer bucket list ideas!
6. Visit museums
These can be big museums or small. We have children discovery museums near us, natural history museums, and, also smaller city history museums that I want to be able to check out.
7. Farmer's Markets
You'd be surprised what you can find and fall in love with at Farmer's Markets. Even if you don't bring any money to spend, just walking around, trying free samples, and enjoying the outdoors is a fun-filled family activity.
8. Picnic and Movie Outside
Have a BBQ, pack a picnic basket, have friends bring over a ton of random food. Eat on the porch, or at a park. Go to a drive in movie (we have one near us--perfect since we'd be in our car and Rhys can sleep in his carseat), or set up a screen and wait till dark!
9. Go on a hike
Utah is known for it's canyon hikes. I'd love to do a few of these...maybe more in August or September when it cools down a tad...right now it's 100*!!! But, a lot of these hikes are easy, beautiful, and have streams or waterfalls to play in.
10. Go to Theme Parks
These can be big ones if you live near them, like Disneyland or Universal Studios, or more local ones, like King's Dominion or Lagoon. Or, even waterparks! There are rides for all ages--kiddy rides (I can't wait to get pictures of Rhys in kiddy rides), family rides, adult rides. You'll be set for the whole day!
So, whether you want adventure or local fun, there are plenty of things you can do to make your summer more fun and get out of the house more...and I'm hoping to do just that to avoid setting a SAHM habit of being a homebody and a couch potato!
What is on your summer bucket list?

Jess from Bookworms in Dresses
blog // flikr // twitter // instagram // pinterest
You are a book blogger--what is your all time favorite book and why?
The dreaded question! I have such a hard time picking a favorite book! It's always changing based on what I've recently read! Normally I do have a fall back though, and that book is called Bullshit by Harry G. Frankfurt. It's a tiny little book that I've always carried around in my purse. The subject matter is rather obvious, but it's such a quick and interesting read. A recent favorite read is American Gods by Neil Gaiman.

What is your least favorite book and why?
I hate a lot of things, although I normally don't hate books. I'm going to have to pick Fifty Shades of Grey though. Mainly due to the writing style, I mean, it's blatantly obvious that it was once fan fiction. I mean....all those terrible 'inner goddess' lines? Puh-leaseeee!

Why do you enjoy reading?
I've always enjoyed escaping into literature. As a child I had a VERY active imagination and reading has always sparked my creativity and allowed my mind to grow. There are so many worlds to explore, so many people to meet, and things to learn from books. It's magical!

What are three things you learned since you started blogging?
1.How to properly grow and manage multiple social media accounts.
2. More about myself. Blogging has really taught me a lot about myself and looking back I can see how I've grown over the years too, both in my writing and my interests. It's pretty awesome!
3. How many bloggers there are out there. I never realized how large the blogging community was until I joined it. There are so many amazing girls (and boys) out there blogging that I've gotten to meet and everyone is so helpful!

What is one of your guilty pleasures and why? Hmmm, probably eating brownie batter. I know, I know, you aren't supposed to, but it tastes SO GOOD. In fact, I actually like uncooked brownie batter more than I like cooked brownies...which is a little bit weird.

Meet Jessica Lynn Writes!

I love getting to know different bloggers, especially when we have something in common! Especially when they find me!

I met Jessica from Jessica Lynn Writes. She's a mom of two beautiful little girls and is married to a Air Force man! (Thank him for a service, Jessica!) What I like most is that she writes about a hodgepodge of things, just like me, and mostly about her kids!

Get to know her a bit better and check her out! (She's also hanging around the bottom of each post this entire month!)

blog // twitter // facebook // instagram // pinterest
How did you come up with the name to your blog?
My blog has had many names over the years, and most of them were niche-related, but once I realized I wanted to write about many things, I decided to go for something a little more broad. "Jessica Lynn Writes," while not a fun name with a play on words or anything like that, is my brand. My name is Jessica Lynn and I love to write!

What is your blog's mission or goal?
I don't live near family, and even my husband is gone for several months out of the year, so my number one goal is to provide a place for our family and friends to keep up with our lives. I love to tell stories and share parts of our lives, so this is the best outlet for me. Yes, Facebook is great for that, but some of our older relatives don't have Facebook. They do, however, have email and get my posts sent to them directly.

What is the best thing about blogging for you?
There are so many great things! I love interacting with readers, and then having those readers become real-life friends. I love connecting with other people over the words I share. But the best thing is probably the opportunity to have an outlet. I love writing, and I'm thankful for my blog.

What has been the hardest thing about blogging?
It's hard to not get caught up in the numbers by trying to be the best and biggest blog on the block. Blogging ebbs and flows, just like life, and it's hard to keep it up all the time. It's hard to remember why it is, exactly, that you blog. I've started making a profit on my blog, so I'm still a work in progress when it comes to finding the balance between wanting those numbers to go up, and wanting to write meaningful posts that people will enjoy reading (and that I'll enjoy writing). It's also really hard when you put your heart and soul (and time) into a post, only to have it be one of the least-commented posts.

What are some lessons you've learned while blogging?
I've learned SO much from blogging. I've learned that this is my me time. I'm a happier person when I can spend time creating something for my blog. A lot of work goes into a post, even if it's a post without pictures, so I've had to learn some time management, and to be able to put a post on the back-burner if something else (family related, mostly) comes up.

Besides blogging, what are some other hobbies of yours?
I love reading! I forgot about it for awhile, but I made a goal at the beginning of the year to read 10 books, and I've already surpassed that! It's hard to find time to read, but a Kindle makes it easier...as does a husband who makes me take a bath once a week so I can relax. I also LOVE traveling. It makes me happy, and I'm really excited to take my kids on trips. My daughter has already been to a handful of countries, and she's about to mark Disney World off her list this fall!

What are your plans for the summer?Funny you should ask, because I made a Summer Bucket List :) I also plan on staying inside. Today the heat index is 109, which is just a tad bit out of my comfort zone.

What are 3 of your favorite posts you've written?
This question always stumps me! I've been blogging for 10 years, so I have more than a few posts under my belt! In no particular order, these are my current favorite three:
What Being a First-Time Mom is Really Like
Any of my travel posts make me happy.

To the Land of My Fathers

Although my retired military, current lawyer dad may not look or act it, he is a farm boy. He grew up on a farm in Aberdeen, Idaho. Aberdeen is a very, very, very, very small town near Pocatello, Idaho...if you still haven't heard of Pocatello, try to find it on a map--Pocatello ain't that big either. Well, this weekend, my parents and I decided to drive up to Aberdeen to visit my dad's dad (my paternal grandpa) and surprise him for Father's Day weekend. It's only a 3 hour drive from my parent's house, so we'll grab lunch with my dad's family, then drive back down. It'll be the first time Rhys meets many of his relatives (who have never left Aberdeen), so I'm very excited!

And then, Sunday is Father's Day--Justin's first Father's Day.

So, for now, check out these reads for your weekend!

8 Ways to Encourage Your Kids with Rahab to Riches

As Rhys is growing (he's almost one year old, holy cow!), I trying to take what I have learned from Love and Logic and my teaching experience of preteens, to be the best, positive mom for Rhys. I've also done a ton of research reading baby books, forums, online articles, pediatric websites, etc. Many are saying to lessen the praise and be strict because you don't want to continue more generations of entitled kids who turn into entitled adults. But, I don't agree with that philosophy. I believe that we should encourage our children all the time.

My friend, Miranda from Rahab to Riches, feels the same way. She has five children, so is a bit more experienced than me in parenting. She says, "Everyone needs to be encouraged from time to time. It is what makes us keep going when we want to give up. It makes hard things seem a little easier. It gives us hope when all seems dark. Children are no different. They need to feel encouraged, maybe even more so than adults."

So, together, we have come up with 8 ways to encourage your kids, no matter what the age.

Miranda:
1) Get on their level
I don't mean their height level, although that is always a good idea when talking to a child. I mean get on their interest level. Do activities that they like to do. Read the books that they want to read. Talk about what they want to talk about and listen. I mean really listen to what they have to say. I know as a busy mom of 5, I can listen to my children without really hearing them. I am surrounded by chatter all day, so it is easy for me to tune them out. But it is not okay.
When one of my children is talking to me, even if it is about Velociraptor's eating habits for the gazillionth time, I need to stop what I am doing, look them in the eye, and give them the benefit of my undivided attention. Ask questions, don't just give the boxed "That's nice, honey" response. Children are very perceptive and they can definitely tell when you are giving them the brush off.
It can be discouraging to feel like you are misunderstood or that nobody really shares your interests. It may be hard to get as excited about something as they are, but that is why you need to be intentional about it. Make a choice to encourage your children in their interests. Having you share their enthusiasm will mean the world to them!

2) Say YES more than NO
If you are anything like me, No is a response that is quick to leave your lips. With 5 children asking and needing something from me countless times a day, it is often easier to say No. This week, I have started saying Yes more. Yes, you can go play in the backyard. Yes, you can go barefoot. Yes, we can go to the dollar scoop night at Baskin Robbins. Yes, I will print you out some pictures of dinosaurs and princesses to color.
I realize that as a parent we can't say Yes to everything all the time. Some things are just downright dangerous or inappropriate, and we would be foolish to say Yes in those circumstances. Some days we are just so busy that anything not currently happening just isn't going to get done. But what if we said Yes every chance we got? I bet our children would be happier and not so discouraged when we had to say No.

3) Make a BIG deal out of their accomplishments
Again, with multiple children it can be hard to "oooh" and "aaah" over every single colored page shoved into my face for approval. I can't tell you how many butterflies, dinosaurs, and family drawings I see every week. I really can't-I would lose count! Still, just because that picture looks exactly like the other 15 I've seen today doesn't mean that my child spent any less time and attention on it.
Children learn by repetition. That is why they watch the same show over and over and over and over, and want the exact same bedtime story for 3 months in a row, and how they can memorize songs, scriptures, and poetry so easily. It makes sense that the same would go for drawings, or facts that they've learned that they want to tell you about all day. It really takes me no extra time to boost their spirits by exclaiming how great of a job they did and how much I love it. On the other hand, it could crush their spirit if I didn't care.
The same goes for sports games and music recitals. Life gets busy and sometimes it can be easier to just drop the kids off, or spend the time on the phone instead of watching. But I know that when my kids look out at me on the sidelines and I am sitting there genuinely interested in what is going on, their face lights up and they are on top of the world. It may be "just another event" to you, but to them it is everything.

4) Encourage your children to step out of their comfort zones
My oldest daughter has extreme stage fright. The first time she had to give a camp testimony in front of the church, she couldn't even get a word out before she ran off crying. So a few months later when another opportunity arose for her to say a few things in front of the church,
I told her she didn't have toI practiced with her for days about what she would say. I signed her up for piano lessons so that she would have the opportunity to perform in front of people, and I encouraged her to join the teen choir.
She is still shy about speaking in front of people, and we joke that her testimonies are always the quickest and quietest, but at least she is doing them. We have seen a vast improvement. My husband, who is great at speaking in front of people, has worked with her and given her pointers. And I always make sure to let her know what a great job she did.
The same goes for my middle daughter. Her and my son are only 17 months apart, so they really have never done anything alone their whole lives. She wanted to play soccer because he was playing, but when she realized that she was going to be on a team without her brother, she wanted to quit before we even got to the first practice. We prayed and coaxed and conceded that if she absolutely hated it she wouldn't have to go back. And you know what? She loved it! All she wants to do is play soccer, and just finished her second season.
When you encourage your children to step outside their comfort zones, it proves to them that they are capable. Just be sure to be there to dust them off when they fall and tell them how much you love them and how proud you are of them.

Tayler:
5) Give them responsibility
This works both with children and with students. If you show them that you trust them, they will be more willing to do more. With students, even though they are in Junior High, I give them responsibilities--cleaning, filing, running errands. When I leave a room, I put one of the trouble makers or strugglers in charge, and you should see the weight on their shoulders--they really step up to the plate. Now with Rhys, he's not even one yet. But, I have him do some small things: he has to put his bath toys away (and we cheer him on as he does), throws away his own diapers (and we cheer him on as he does), and he even tries to help buckle himself in (and we thank him). We ask him to put things here, or bring things there, and he loves doing it. If you follow my Instagram, he even wanted to push the grocery cart earlier this week!

6) Thank them for what they do
No matter what age, children love being thanked. Every time Rhys gives us a kiss, or does something we ask him to, we thank him. When he sleeps well during a nap or at night, or finishes a bottle, we thank him. He smiles. Even at the tender age of 11.5 months, he's starting to see the gratitude and smiles on our face and he likes it. In Jr. High, I thank students for answers, for completing homework, for doing something I asked them to. I tell them how proud I am of them. And guess what, I get a bigger effort the next day! Plus, when you show good manners, children will pick it up!

7) Make it a game
Whatever they need help with, play with them, make it a game. Kind of like Miranda's idea of "Getting on their level". There was a long time when Rhys had the ability to stand up by himself, until he noticed, then he got a scared face and sat back down. But, we made it a game trying to help him want to stand up. The same with him walking. We'd be silly as he stumbled/lunged toward each of us and finally, one day, it caught on. We also make our chores a game and are silly, and Rhys wants to be part of it. For older students, it works too. I had to teach my students how to label and diagram sentences. Yuck. Boring. But, then, I decided to do diagram racing for the last 5-10 minutes of each period. It was competitive. It was fun. And there were rewards. They loved learning new concepts in grammar to one-up their classmates in the diagram races.

8) Reward them
Now, that doesn't mean go buy them a new game or a dinner. If you have behavior charts, or chore charts, piece by piece works. Have them work up toward a goal, then give them a tangible reward. With Rhys, recently, he's been a poor eater. So, whenever he actually finishes a meal, we'd thank him, praise him, then we'd give him a strawberry, which is his favorite! Working up towards rewards work with older students too. I had a high standard of my students. I expected all of them to get an 80% or higher on all assessments. So, each time they did, I'd give them a star sticker. They collected these star stickers throughout the year and we had an amazing auction at the end of the year. They would boast to each other how many star stickers they had and would study hard to get them. My mom would encourage my siblings and I by rewarding us with a later bedtime. There are many different rewards you can give!

...Edit: After I published this I realized one more big way you can encourage your children!
Bonus: Encourage them to follow their dreams!
My mom didn't judge me for deciding to study Welsh rather than Spanish (I mean, not even the majority of people in Wales speak Welsh!). She encouraged me as I got my degree in teaching, and not something that would be more financially secure. She is allowing my baby sister to follow her dreams of baking, dancing, playing flute, whatever her teenage dreams happen to be at the time.  I think that is a big, important thing to encourage kids to follow their dreams. Not only does it validate their dreams and interests, but it allows them to believe they can achieve anything.

Do you have any other ways that you encourage your children?
