Random Writings of Rachel

One of the most creatively unique and uniquely creative bloggers I have met is Rachel from Random Writings of Rachel. She is a licensed hairstylist who hated cosmotology school, grew up in Malaysia with a big family, married a Mexican nurse, names her cats medicinal titles, and has lived in Michigan, China, and Malaysia with her husband, speaking English, Spanish, Chinese, and Malay at home! Crazy life! But she's so fun to read! Rachel has sponsored my blog this past month, so I thought you should get to know her better!

How did you come up with the name to your blog?
I actually named my blog after the book of short stories I published when I was 18. And...my dad was the one who came up with the name for my book...therefore, my dad named my blog. In recent times I've begun to minimize the {of Rachel} part of the name, because The Random Writings is all that would fit in my url, anyways.

What is your blog's mission or goal?
I'm not sure I have one cohesive mission (hence the Random in the title), but I do have some big passions and dreams that I want to accomplish through my writing. I want to make "the other side of the world" seem more real to those who don't live in it. I want to write true stories about all those non-famous and yet incredibly important people who wouldn't ever be written about if it weren't for me: people like Robert and my Auntie Letchimi. I also just love to make people laugh and bring a spice of joy into lives that might occasionally seem humdrum.

In addition, freedom to live uninhibited by peer pressure is extremely important to me, and I hope that comes through in my writing. I always want to encourage people who feel uncomfortable in a box to have a the courage they need to get out of it.

What is the best thing about blogging for you?
Writing. Before blogging, I sent page-long emails about my adventures to my parents nearly everyday. Now I have a slightly wider audience for my adventures.

What are 3 of your favorite posts you've written?
It's hard to choose!

First, there's this post, which proves that I shouldn't be allowed to write tutorials of any kind:
How to Become Pinterest-Famous

More than once, my dreams have inspired my blog posts. Once, a dream about polar bears and hyenas inspired a blog post.

And there's always the completely humble post about 10 Reasons Why I'm An Awesome Blogger.

Besides blogging, what are some other hobbies of yours?
I love sewing, but don't currently have a sewing machine. Hopefully that lack will be remedied soon. I also enjoy embroidery--but not crocheting or knitting. Apparently I'm strictly a thread girl, no yarn included.
I also have a secret, mostly un-indulged love for building models (cars, airplanes, buildings, whatever), because that's too impractical. I don't want to keep models, I just like building them.

Where do you live and why did you and your husband chose to live there?
As of summer 2015, we live in Malaysia, and will continue to be here for the foreseeable future. There are many reasons why we chose to make this move. We loved living in China, but when Angel was offered a job here, we decided to accept. We wanted to be closer to my family, as we hope that our future children will get a better chance to interact with their grandparents and aunts. English as a Second Language education is a passion for me because of how needed it is here--good foreign language skills are often a ticket to higher education and can be a way out of poverty for many. I love where we are now because I feel it's a community where our skills and passions can really be used to improve lives. I have no desire to live for myself, but being integrated into the loving, tight-knit community here is so rewarding, I feel like I wouldn't have it any other way.

How have you grown from your East and Southeast Asian experiences?
Living in Asia has certainly changed me for the better. Because of my experiences here, I don't talk about human trafficking or abuse of domestic workers as far-off, distant things. They're real, they happen to people I know, and the world we live in has a lot of changing to do. I'm more passionate about life because the people around me here have such passion.

What are three adjectives people typically use to describe you?
I swear, I should figure out how to do a scientific word search of the comments on my blog and figure out what three adjectives are used most. But I have no idea how to do that. Here are my guesses:
Random
Colorful
Cute (it's the curly hair, I swear. Everyone will call you cute if you have curls.)

What are three things on your bucket list?
This was by far the hardest question, apparently I'm not good at bucket lists:
Visit Tokyo Disney Resort.
Own a sewing machine {again} and design my own clothes.
Plan a wedding for somebody--probably for one of my five sisters, except most of my sisters say they'll probably elope.

So, what do you think of Rachel? Make sure to check out her site and say, "Hello!"
