Student Writings linkup, Skirtember Update, and College Football!

As I'm going on my second year of teaching, I've noticed that junior high students have some wonderful ideas, albeit sometimes not transmitted well into the written word. This makes it really funny to read their writings, whether in history class or now in English class. It is probably my favorite part of grading (aka the only part that makes it bearable!)

Like, there was this one time I had them write on responsibilities and rights of citizens of the U.S.
Or the time they wrote time travel diaries about events in the Old West.
As well as other funny, random writings.

Well, now that school has been going for a month and I finally feel like my head is above the water, I started searching for these gold gems again. And I've started to find them. But, I know that numerous of you are teachers as well and find a wonderful trove of hilarity and deepness. So, that is why I am introduced the

Students Write the Darndest Things link-up!!
Students Write the Darndest Things

The rules:
Mention your name and your blog. What subject and age/grade you teach. What assignment these "quotes" are from.
Write down funny, silly, "no-duh", wonderful, inspiring, deep things your students say. Don't use any names. It doesn't have to be long at all. There can be any number of quotes!

Link up is every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. If you are interested in co-hosting, let me know!
Be ready for this Wednesday, September 25th for the first ever linkup!

I'm excited!!

*****************
Here is my week for Skirtember...I did wear a skirt/dress/dress-shirt everyday, I just didn't take pictures every day. I was behind last week as well as pretty sick. But, I pushed through and made sure to continue with Skirtember. Except for Saturday. Saturday was "do-nothing-but-sit-in-bed-all-day-working-on-lesson-plans-until-it-was-time-to-go-to-football" day.

Outfit #1: Skirt--Wal-Mart (like almost 10 years ago), Shirt--Wet Seal
Outfit #2: Dress--Target
Outfit #3: Mini-dress--Ross, Shirt--Wet Seal, Pants--Papaya

Saturday was the very first home football game I had ever been too.
Now, I am an athlete, and I like sports. I have played soccer and volleyball for years! But, in high school, I was on the volleyball team, doing recreational soccer leagues, or being smart on Academic Bowl teams. So, I never really went to sporting events. I went to one football game (not my own) with a few church friends.
My first job in college was working for BYU Concessions. I kept that job the 5 years (including the year I did my teaching internship) I was there. Which meant I worked every football game. So, I was at the games, but only watched a minute here and minute there. I did, however, go to volleyball games, soccer games, and the occasional basketball game when I was wasn't scheduled to work.
So, this year being graduated, Justin made sure to buy both of us All-Sport-Passes. My first, ever football game was the UVA vs. BYU game. Although we lost, it was still quite the adventure.

BYU and University of Utah have been rivals since the beginning of time. Each year, we play them and it is known as the Holy War. It is the most important game of the year. The stadium is more than sold out and if you wear red on campus at all that week, you get death glares and shouts (the Mormon version of "being jumped"). So, this was a pretty big game.

It was quite the intense game. Our Running Back, Jamaal Williams, got hit very, very hard and was actually taken out on a stretcher, not moving! For more info on him, check out this article. Don't worry, he's doing pretty well now. Sadly, we lost, and now I have to deal with my cousins and uncles (who all cheer for the U) giving me crap about it. (They're a little more obsessed with the rivalry than I am.)

Why I Love My Students

Skirtember is still going strong during the second week! Yaay! I wore a skirt every day this week...except for Sunday because I was sick and stayed in my PJs all day--I didn't even brush my hair on Sunday!

Monday--Tank and shirt at Wet Seal, Skirt at Wal-Mart, tights at H&M
Tuesday--Leggings at Wal-Mart, dress at Papaya
Wednesday--Shirt at Papaya, skirt at Wal-Mart, tights at H&M, shoes at Payless
Thursday--dress at Target, tights at H&M, cardigan at Target
Friday--shirt at Wet Seal, dress from parents from Hawaii, pants at Papaya, shoes at Sole Envy

I love the place I teach at. It is a small charter school in West Jordan that focuses on having a classical education. Our teaching philosophy focuses on Core Knowledge.

I have a total of 54 students:
-- 21 seventh graders for two periods of Language Arts and Literature
--6 low-ability ninth graders for Language Arts
--11 ninth graders for Literature
--16 eighth graders for two periods of Language Arts and Literature

I love these students! I have only been teaching here three weeks and I've already gotten such a good connection with my students. I am able to see their personalities in their writings and discussions. I can see what they understand and what they don't. I really like having smaller classes. We can be more in a more intimate setting with our learning.

They definitely have their own personalities. (Here I am going to copy Bonnie because I love what she writes about her students--and it's true, each class has their own personality!)

7th graders (period 1&2): These students are just bursting to learn. I have about 5 out of the 21 who are new to the charter school, new to the rigor of grammar and writing, new to always writing in cursive. But, they are all yearnin' for some learnin'! We recently read "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant. We learned about irony and I had them create alternate endings using some form of irony. They were absolutely hilarious! These kids are very funny! I love them!

9th grade Language Arts (period 3): I only have 6 students in this class. It is a lower-ability for language arts. All six have some sort of learning or social disorder that affects their writing ability. But, these kids (5 boys and 1 girl), all love me already (and I them) because we all like anime and comic-book stuff. They try their hardest and really want to be able to succeed. They want to prove to me they understand the grammar. But, they are also a very talkative bunch! It's one thing to have classroom management skills with a class that is 30+, but how do you manage 6 very close friends?!?!?

9th grade Literature (period 5): There aren't very many 9th graders because most leave to have a public jr. high experience before going into high school. So, I only have 11. On the first day, I asked them what their favorite genre was, and without fail, all 11 said either Sci-Fi or Fanstasy! YAAAY! What a perfect class. And boy, do our discussions rock! We just finished studying Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" and we had the best discussion on tradition, cultural differences, and morals. Boy, am I excited to get into novels with these 11 wonderful students who love discussing and applying literature to their lives! They all love English classes! I have to thank their previous English teachers!

8th graders (period 6&7): I have quite a few overachievers. There are about 5 out of the 16 who will always raise their hand. I'm just about at the point where I have to ask for someone other than them to answer to incorporate more class participation. However, they are a very quiet group overall. I'm not sure if this is because I'm their last teacher for the day and they are tired/done, or if its because they are 8th graders. I'm still trying to figure out how to inspire the majority of them to be active, willing participants in class. But, they are very fast and very accurate with their grammar! The best out of all my classes!

Two Geeks Walk into a Con

News Flash:
I am such a GEEK!!!
As is Justin. Which is why our marriage is awesome!!!!!
So, this weekend, we went to Comicon.

But, before I get into that, I have joined Skirtember challenge. This challenge is to wear a dress, skirt, or dress-shirt every day in September. Well, I didn't know about this until the 3rd. So, that day I dressed in a skirt for work (luckily I wore a skirt to church like I always do on Sundays).

Sunday, 9/1, I wore a black and cream maxi skirt, cream skirt, and a black wrap.
Monday, I didn't know and I traveled on a plane home.
Tues, 9/3 Skirt: old, Socks: old, Tank and Cardigan: old, Shoes: Sole Envy
Wednesday, 9/4 Shirt: Papaya, Skirt: BYU Bookstore, Tights: H&M, Shoes: Payless
Thursday, 9/5 I wore a pink dress with a brown shirt and tights.
Friday 9/6 Skirt: Black and cream maxi, Doctor Who fan shirt.
Sat 9/7 I wore a costume for Comicon--no skirt.
Sunday, 9/8 Skirt and shirt: WalMart, Tights: H&M, Shoes:Payless

So, onto Geekdom!!!
Friday, we went after I was done teaching. Saturday, we dressed up. We saw a lot of cool costumes and some awesome booths. We went to a few panels, but honestly, some were boring and all were packed. Salt Lake City didn't expect this many tickets to be sold. It was jam-packed on Saturday--over 50,000. They eventually stopped letting people in. We hung out with a few friends.

I dressed up as Rogue, based off the cartoon, X-Men: Evolution.

I think I pulled it off. Here are some other pictures from ComiCon!

Gollum doesn't like my advances!
Korra from Legend of Korra and a Kyoshi Warrior from Avatar the Last Airbender
Ulquiorra's last form from Bleach anime!
Justin and I adventured in the TARDIS!
Justin's Wolverine! Doesn't he look awesome!!
He totally pulled the look off!
There is a girl inside that moving Dalek!
Thor doesn't want to be touched by Rogue--he knows what'll happen to him!
My favorite Bleach character: Urahara!
Justin found Gru on his way to steal the moon!
What a nice Ood! Very obedient when I asked to take a picture with it.
Loki, Captain America, and Thor-a
Justin found his idol.
Captain Kirk! William Shatner!
Jana, this one is for you! We snuck a picture of Dean Cane, when we should have paid $40 for it!
I have proof I saw the Silence!!! No more forgetting!
