Why I WON'T Use Snapchat

It seems like recently, all my blogging friends are rushing to jump on the Snapchat train. However, some of them have been a bit hesitant, asking their followers and friends if they should make the jump. I would always answer with a resounding NO! And I will never join Snapchat...Periscope, maybe....if I had a working phone camera! But Snapcat? No.

Here are six reasons I WON'T be using Snapchat for personal or blogging use.

6 reasons why bloggers should stay away from snapchat

"Safe" sexting.

Snapchat was created by a bunch fraternity guys. There was a leaked email that shows that their demographic was women for pictures easily detelable. And the way they refer to women is completely crude.

We have all heard Snapchat is for sexting. Be real and honest. There are many sights that warn parents about sexting. I mean, the picture disappears, right? What an opportunity for teens whose parents check their phones! That is also why they don't let kids under 13 use Snapchat. Even the FBI is warning parents about Snapchat.

There has already been a site of pulled pictures from Snapchat called Snapchat Sluts, showing inappropriate pictures of women and girls from Snapchat. These women probably believed that the pictures were safe and hidden and self-destructed. But, as you can see, it's a gateway to porn! Two sisters have actually sued Snapchat because of a revealing photo of them in a bikini.

Cyber bullying

We already know that cyber bullying is getting worse. I mean, there is now a movie out about cyber bullying (and ghosts, but still)! Any form of bullying can lead to a person, child, teen, or adult, to fall into a depression, self-harm, or even commit suicide. The worst thing about Snapchat and cyberbullying, is because of the timer of photos, it is hard to get tangible evidence of the bullying.

I have personally had a family member be somewhat bullied through Snapchat. It was more of a misunderstanding and silly reasoning of an angsty girl and did no damage, but it could have been worse.

Ways to save Snaps

Nothing on the internet is safe. Nothing on the internet is temporary. Once something is online, it creates a permanent, everlasting footprint. Even though your snaps "disappear", there are still ways to save it. Smart phones can take screen shots. Other phones or cameras can take screen shots. There are now apps to get them back and save them, like SnapHack. And, it actually never totally "disappears." It's just hidden deep in files. They are actually saved as temporary files on your phone's hardrive!

Now, the bloggers I know don't have to worry about any scandalous photos--they don't use Snapchat for that. But, we as bloggers have all heard about intellectual and creative property infringements--stories of blogs copywriting other blogs, people stealing bloggers' photos, etc. What an easy way for this to happen!

Snapchat OWNS your photos and has access to personal information

I've read many, many posts sayig that one of the main reasons bloggers switch to Wordpress is because they own the content, whereas, technically, Google owns your blog if you are on Blogger, even if you use a 3rd party host. Well, Snapchat has the same issue as Blogger. If you actually read the Terms and Usage Agreement, as well as their Privacy Policy, somethings might surprise you!

Snapchat's privacy policy states that they have access to and collect information from your activity and messages, your device information including your unique device identifiers and phone number, your device phonebook and photos, website cookies, and login information!

And this is directly from the Terms of Agreement:
  • You retain all ownership rights in your User Content. However, by submitting User Content to Snapchat, you hereby grant us an irrevocable, nonexclusive, worldwide, perpetual, royalty-free, sublicensable, and transferable license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, edit, publish, create derivative works from, distribute, perform, promote, exhibit, and display such User Content in any and all media or distribution methods, now known or later developed (the "User Content License"), subject to any privacy settings you have set to control who can see your User Content. Without limiting the foregoing, when you submit User Content to Snapchat in connection with Our Stories and other crowd-sourced Stories, you agree that the User Content License accords Snapchat the right to sublicense such User Content to other companies, organizations, or individuals in connection with the syndication, broadcast, distribution, promotion, or publication of Our Stories and other crowd-sourced Stories in any and all media or distribution methods, now known or later developed. No use of User Content, including without limitation, Our Stories and other crowd-sourced Stories, in accordance with the User Content License shall entitle you to any compensation from Snapchat, or any other companies, organizations, or individuals
Which means they can use your photos however they want, including selling them for their own profit!

Scandals, Suings, Bad Press

There has been so many hackings and lawsuits (including one of the co-founders suing the rest) that I'm not going to hyperlink to them. Just Google it! Do we, as bloggers, influencers, encouragers, want to be associated to that? I think not.

It's just yet another social media platform

I'm already a user of blogger, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and researching about Periscope. I am a stay-at-home-mom with a busy 1 year old. I have a husband who wants to spend quality time with me, and I him! I am also a tutor, a freelance writer, and a transcriber. There is no way that I want to stretch myself any thinner with yet another social media platform. (That, and an unworking iPhone camera is why I'm hesitant to join Periscope). Do we as bloggers really need to be on every platform to be successful? I'm saying we don't!

So, although bloggers won't get into sexting trouble on their Snapchat accounts, there are plenty of other issues involved. I won't hate or picket against you if you do join Snapchat, but I do ask, please, please, please, please do your research and do it well. As for me, I'm happy on other platforms!

Do you use Snapchat? Why or why not?

May Blogger Men Tell All & Guys Behind the Blog

We're combining both guy linkups again, so enjoy getting to know my awesome, amazing husband more!

Would you rather…

1. Watch Star Wars or Star Trek?

Star Wars.  I grew up going to the theater with my Dad watching the re-releases of Star Wars in the 90's and it was some of the best memories of my childhood.  Star Trek only got interesting for me with the recent releases.

2. Take a summer vacation in the mountains or the beach?
Difficult question.  I love the beach and I love the mountains, but both have things I really dislike.  I probably like the beach more, but after 1 day I'm done, whereas I could be in the mountains for weeks.

3. Use Facebook or Twitter?
Facebook.  I have a twitter, but I haven't touched in in literally months.  I liked the concept of it, but not the execution.  Plus, I've gone through so many types of social media over the years, I've kind of settled on Facebook and maybe LinkedIn and called it quits.  I did a blog, a Xanga, Myspace, toyed with Google+.  There's too much.  Facebook is fine, and when I'm looking for a job, LinkedIn.  That's good for me.

4. Go camping or stay in a nice hotel?
Depends.  I love camping, but a nice hotel has a lot of perks.  It all depends on what I was doing that day or the next.

5. Watch sports or play sports?
Baseball - Play
Football - Watch and Play
Basketball - Watch and Play
Volleyball - Play
Hockey - Watch
Olympic Events - Watch
Golf - Play
Rugby - Watch
Soccer - Neither

Becoming Adorrable

1 // What is your favorite family tradition?
Large breakfasts.  My dad would make pancakes until he was tired.  He expects all of them to be eaten.  There were seldom leftovers.

2 // Who's your male celebrity crush?

Probably Nathan Fillion.

3 // What song best sums you up?
So, this is actually really hard.  I've spent a few days trying to find a good one, but most of the music I listen to is rather hard rock-ish stuff whose lyrics get quite...harsh.  I realize nothing is going to be a perfect fit, but this is the best I could find.

4 // What three things do you think of the most each day?
My family.  They are constantly on my mind.
Food.  I get hungry rather easy.  It's hard not to think about food.
Honestly, that's about it.  2 things constantly on my mind.  There isn't a consistent 3rd.

5 // What is your most embarrassing memory?

Well, I'll never tell that, but I will share "the most embarrassing thing I'm willing to admit on the internet".
I was 21 years old before I realized the phrase was "Nip it in the bud" and not "Nip it in the butt"....Well, thats obviously not very embarrassing.  So you should...

And that's about right.
Honestly though, I could write novels on embarrassing things I've done, however, I'm not very inclined to share them.  I make a big enough fool of myself on the internet already.

How did you come up with the name to your blog?
My blog name is, well, my name. Creativity is not my forte. At least not with words. I wanted to write about the things that affect my own life, so why beat around the bush. I’m writing about me, why not call it that? That is, after all one of my personality traits. I am very straight to the point.

What is your blog's mission or goal?
A couple of years ago, a friend of mine moved to Russia and started a blog. Eventually she just stopped writing. When I asked her why, she told me it was because she had settled into her transition. Like for her, blogging is helping me transition- primarily from college to the real world. There are so many things that change in that process: my address, my job, my surrounding, my bank accounts, my budget. This is my way of documenting and sharing it.

Besides blogging, what are some other hobbies of yours?
I spent my first three years of college playing on the rugby team. I’m also super active in my sorority. I do a lot of crafting, and I’m constantly working to learn.

What is the best thing about blogging for you?
It’s really cathartic for me. I have so much going on lately. This semester has been so crazy. This summer will be busy, with lots going on and a bit of being here and a bit of being there. I certainly won’t be able to develop a routine because of it. Blogging, though, has given me a bit of consistency in the chaos of it all.

What are 3 of your favorite posts you've written?

A Month of Confidence--Job and Hobbies

Welcome to the third week of A Month of Confidence!

Last week, we focused on our relationships. It was a tough one for me. Not with Rhys, who is the apple of my eye, but with my husband. The dynamic of our relationship has been different since Rhys was born, and I wanted to make sure it was a good dynamic. It's hard to keep a pre-baby relationship when you are both working and have to take care of a child.

I was up more in the morning when Justin kissed me as he left (however, that is Rhys's doing, as he has been waking up at 6:30 more often than 7 last week). I did pretty good with only doing school work when Rhys was asleep, although I did blog some and do social media while he played independently (but I played a lot with him as well). About half the time we ate at the table, but we always ate together. About half the time, I took care of Rhys in the middle of the night--it's hard to remember that goal when you are still 95% asleep. I wasn't able to leave little notes for Justin. It's a bit hard when he gets up and leaves before I do, comes home before I do, and goes to bed with me.

This week, we're going to focus on confidence in work and hobbies.

A Month of Confidence

As a part-time working mom, I have to balance my work load with my son. Sometimes, that means I don't get as much done with work as I'd like to, and I scramble during my prep to get things ready for my students. It also means sometimes my hobbies, like working out, reading, blogging, writing, and video-gaming is put on hold. But, with all things, there is balance that can happen.

But, there are always small things you can do to make sure you can be the best you at your job and have some down-time dedicated for your hobbies.

Here is my plan for the Week of Job and Hobbies:
- While Rhys is taking his morning nap, I will make sure to get everything ready and packed up for work and his babysitter, that way, from 10:00-10:40, I can be on social media.
- I will make sure I read 30 minutes a day. I can't be on social media until I do so.
- I will learn how to schedule tweets, instagrams, facebook posts this week.
- I will do my school work as soon as I come home and let Justin have some time with Rhys.
- I will not do school work past 9pm.
- I will take one day to play videogames with Justin after Rhys goes to bed.

I suggest that you also keep a confidence journal. I am, and each day I will have 3 lists:
1) Drops of Awesome--little things I did or accomplished
2) Little Moments--I have a quote in my living room that says, "Enjoy the little things in life, for someday they will be the big things."
3) Grateful List--small blessings
