Christmas Break

We had so much fun spending a week in Georgia with Justin's parents for Christmas. It also helped that we went from 20* blizzard weather to 75* rain and humidity. Definitely no white Christmas for us! I am so glad I was able to accomplish most of my goals for December (even with cold, and many illnesses, including all of us getting a stomach flu in Georgia).

Here are what my goals were this month:

Sub Goals:
- Buy and watch old Christmas movies with Rhys
We did buy a collection DVD of these old videos, but only watched two with him: How the Grinch Stole Christmas and A Year Without Santa Claus. We'll watch more next year when Rhys has more of an attention span to watch a full movie.
- Do Elf on the Shelf with Rhys
We decided to forego this as we are trying to be careful with our expenses.
- Decorate the house with the family
Justin and I decorated when Rhys went to bed, but as soon as this year's package of Morrell ornament exchange came, we had Rhys help us put them on the tree.
- Visit Temple Square and see the lights
We did this together as a family of 3, and it was nice and intimate just being by ourselves and not extended family. Rhys loved the lights.
- Make and post the Morrell family DIY ornament
Done and Done. Rhys helped me make this year's DIY "A Savior is Born" ornament.
- Do Christmas cooking with Rhys and make plates to give to neighbors
Again, we watched our expenses and didn't really even buy a lot of food this month (especially since we will be gone for a week and a half and then moving halfway through January). But, Rhys did help me make some no-bake cookies.
- Host a Christmas party
Again, timing and finances were against us. But, this is one of my priorities for next year (and a Friends-giving party, too).

We left on Tuesday the 22nd. I had woken up with a sore throat. It was snowing, and we took the tram up to the airport. Rhys loved riding it--he kept saying "chugga chugga." Thankfully, our flight was during Rhys's naptime, so after playing with the windows, lights, fans, and touch screens, Rhys fell asleep before take-off and slept for half the flight.

When we got to Georgia, it was getting late, but my in-laws were so excited to see Rhys. Thankfully, he warmed right up to them, which we believe is because he recognized them from our weekly FaceTimes. My mother- and father-in-law cherished every minute with him.

Watching ESPN and the Weather Channel with Papa

However, Wednesday is when things started to go downhill. Less than five minutes after putting Rhys down for a nap, he screamed and we walked into him and his playpen covered in throwup. He continued to do so for the rest of the day. That night, after eating a lot of Puppy Chow, and watching Christmas Wish with my mother- and sister-in-law, I started throwing up as well. Thankfully, Rhys and I were better during Christmas Eve morning, although we were still a bit queasy. But, we were able to enjoy Christmas dinner!

Christmas morning was quick, easy, and peaceful. Rhys loved his new toys and  all the toys he found at Grams and Papa's. However, he never ate well during the day. But, we did end up going to the Atlanta Aquarium Rhys loved seeing all the fish. It was a definite drain on all of us though, since Rhys and I were recovering (Rhys was now having trouble at his other end and I was still suffering from a cold--sore throat and stuffed nose) and Justin was beginning to have stomach issues. However, we loved the time we spent there and can't wait for an opportunity to go back or even go to the Draper Aquarium here in Utah.

Waving "Hi" to the fish

Late that evening, Justin's sister Jill and her family drove down from Virginia...and Justin started throwing up. The next morning, we warned them of the illnesses, and Justin also had my sore throat. We rested, relaxed, visited, and watched Rhys become obsessed with his four cousins (They were equally obsessed with him).  It had rained on and off this whole day and Rhys went out on a walk with his cousins and splashed in puddles for the first time.Thankfully, Justin and I were feeling well enough to go see Star Wars VII with Jill and her husband, Corbin. We loved it (and are super excited about all the movies coming out in 2016!).

Sunday, we all went to church and took naps. The adults, and two oldest kids, played a lot of Yahtzee, Uno, and Clue, while the two younger cousins and Rhys played with the trains, Paw Patrol, blocks, and other toys. We feasted on steak, ribs, and other good food. We also took all the kids to a playground and all five loved it!

Monday, we all went to the local Children's Discovery Museum. Rhys had an absolute blast--there were toys everywhere, as well as a lot of vehicles to climb into, shiny and noisy things, and a playground. We spent about two hours there and had to drag all the kids out because we adults were all getting hungry. Typical Morrell style, we ate at Taco Mac. The rest of the day was filled with TV, more games, and packing. Jill's family left to go to Myrtle Beach, and we hunkered down for an "early night".

Yesterday, we woke up before the crack of dawn...none of us had slept well...Justin because he was still stuffed up, Rhys and I because Rhys kept waking up due to coughing. At the airport while waiting to load for our flight, Rhys had a lot of fun playing with the LDS missionaries returning home. He cried for the first 30 minutes of the flight, but then fell asleep. Thankfully, we were placed in the front of the carriage, so there was extra leg room. Rhys rotated between sleeping on the floor at our feet and in my arms, waking for 30 seconds every now and then. But, he finally woke up as we were descending.

When we got home, our house was freezing, as we decided not to keep the heat on while we were gone. But, thankfully, it's warmed back up. Thankfully, I feel 100% again, but Justin is still a bit congested, and Rhys has a runny nose and coughing. But, besides the crappy illnesses, we had a very good Christmas Break. Justin has to work today and tomorrow, then we will be heading to my family for the New Year's weekend and even more Christmas presents!

DIY "A Savior Is Born" Ornament

For some reason, this scripture has popped out at me many times the past few months whenever I thought about Christmas:

Isaiah 9:6 "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given...and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

I love the different names of Christ. And, the fact that Child and Son is emphasized in the scriptures. Because of that, I decided I wanted to involve Rhys in the ornaments. I know this is his second Christmas, but since he is a toddler, it will hopefully mean something to him. So, for this year's Morrell DIY ornament exchange, I created these "A Savior is Born" ornaments.

Supplies

24 felt trees
1 can of puffy paint
1 paint sponge
24 sparkly star stickers
1 ball of thin twine
1 permanent marker
hole punch
at least one toddler =)

(I forgot to take a picture of the supplies!!)

Steps

1) Paint your toddler's hand with the white puffy paint on the sponge brush.

2) Press your toddler's hand onto the tree.

3) Let them dry.

(I forgot to take pictures of the rest of the steps...I'm awesome this year, huh?)

4) Punch a hole in the top corner.
5) Write the scripture from Isaiah 9:6 (or any Christmas scripture) in permanent marker, in your best handwriting.
6) Put the star sticker on the top of the tree.
7) Cut some twine and tie it in the hole.

Blogger Men Tell All & Guys Behind the Blog // April

Because of scheduling, Justin gets double duty today and will be doing both of his linkups today! Lucky you! Yaaaay!

1) Has Starbucks ever spelled your name wrong on a cup? If yes, what's the craziest way that someone has spelled it?
Well, I rarely ever go to Starbucks, but I have had some very interesting variations on my last name.  Morel, Morale, Merrill, Monrel, Mower, Maxwell....The list goes on.

2) Who would play your wife/fiance/girlfriend in a movie or TV show about your lives?
Like, who would best represent my wife, or who would I want to be my wife?  Ideally, I would love Mandy Moore to play my wife.

But if I went on looks, I think either Amy Adams or Isla Fisher.

And if Tayler was being cast in her British/Welsh ancestry, complete with accent, I'd go with Lucy Griffiths.

3) What is your proudest accomplishment?
I have 3.  I beat a Polynesian at an eating contest, I beat an Asian at Dance Dance Revolution, and I beat my English Teacher wife at Scrabble.
In all seriousness, Rhys.  Rhys is my proudest accomplishment.

I mean, come one...look at that face
4) What is your favorite holiday and why?
My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving.  Food, family, and football.  You literally are given 1 entire day to eat and 1 day afterwards to sit and veg out.

5) What is your favorite breed of dog?  If you don't have a favorite breed, describe the characteristics of your ideal dog (or cat)!
Pugs are best dogs.  Pugs, or really big dogs.  Nothing in between.  If its a small dog, it must be a pug.

Anything bigger than a pug, it must be big enough for a toddler to ride like a horse.  Or even ride like a bear.

1. What is the last song you listened to?

2. What would you sing at a karaoke night?
Just about anything.  I have been told I do a great rendition of Kryptonite by 3 Doors Down.  Be noted, I am a hideous singer.  Not in the "Oh, I'm sure you sound good even though you think you're a bad singer" kind of way.  I'm like, the borderline tone-deaf kind of way.

3. Would you describe yourself as an introvert or an extrovert?

I would describe myself as an extrovert who enjoys his alone time.

4. What is one thing you will never do again?

Drink a half cup of apple cider vinegar.  Straight.
I was reading online about how good ACV is for you, and I've read all these different recipes and drink detoxes you can do with it, and so I thought I would try it out.  Yeah, totally didn't read the ingredients thoroughly.  Its like, 1 tablespoon of ACV to 1 cup of water.  Don't know how I got 1/2 cup of undiluted ACV from that, but I did.  I will never do it again.

5. How do you think [your blogger] has benefited from blogging?

Well, she has won a lot of really neat free stuffs, but she has also made a lot of good friends that have been there for her during rough times, and that is worth more than anything she could fiscally make off of this.

How did you come up with the name to your blog?
It actually comes from my Facebook page I started years ago when I decided that I wanted to make quality hand crafted items and sell them.  My first name, Aliza, is tricky to say, so I used my nickname from college for my page.  When I was working full time, I took a break from crafting and creating.  Recently I have started working on projects again.  I found that I really liked sharing my projects, recipes, and reviews with others.  That’s how my blog came about!

What is your blog's mission or goal?
I want to share my creative ideas for crafts and recipes, and let people know about interesting places to visit or new products to try.

Besides blogging, what are some other hobbies of yours?
I love to read, work in my garden, spend time with my kiddos, travel, work on recording my family history, and watching tv – right now I’m watching the Doctor Who series again.

What is the best thing about blogging for you?
I love to be creative and work on projects.  Blogging has given me a way to share those pojects with other people so they can create them too.  I like being able to share art exhibits that are interesting and pictures of the beautiful earth around us.  I know how much I love to visit other blogs and get ideas and I hope that other people will be helped by visiting my blog too.

What are 3 of your favorite posts you've written?
