Rice Krispie Holiday Wreaths

I know, I know...it's not even Thanksgiving yet. But, one of my callings (positions) at church is being in the Friendshipping Committee. This committee is to try and make everyone feel welcome and to help build deep and meaningful friendships. My main job is being in charge of a Recipe Exchange. This is my first month in charge. Since my congregation is full of married students, many are going home to in-laws for Christmas after finals. So, we combined both November's and December's together. 

Thus, this theme was:

Holiday Desserts

Since everyone was probably going to do pumpkin chocolate chip something or other, I decided to do one of my favorite Christmas treats that my mom used to always make:

Ingredients

3 tbsp butter

10 oz marshmallows

1 tsp green food coloring

6 cups Rice Krispies (or Corn Flakes)

1 bag of M&M's (you'll only need the red ones)

Directions

1) Put wax paper on a few cookie sheets. 

2) Melt the butter on medium-low heat in a pot.

3) Pour the marshmallows in and stir until they melt as well.

4) When the marshmallows have completely melted, take it off the heat and stir in the green dye.

5) Pour in the 6 cups of Rice Krispies. I actually had Justin pour it in as I stirred.

6) Now you want to act quickly. Lather your hands with butter and grab small portions of it.

7) Place it on the wax paper and mold into a wreath shape.

8) Stick 4-5 red M&Ms on each wreath.

9) Let cool for a few hours.

This is a very fun date night dessert to make, as well. I enjoyed having Justin making this me. Of course, with every few M&Ms he put on the wreaths, he ate a small handful more. But, be warned...you will need a lot of butter on your hands, or the Rice Krispies will stick to your hands and refuse to come off. Also, do it quickly, or they'll cool too quickly to mold.

The activity was super fun. We had quite a few traditional desserts for Thanksgiving and Christmas and many other country's desserts. It was great to get to know the young wives and mothers in my congregation a bit more (especially now that I don't have to work in the Nursery anymore)! We had quite a few laughs, joking about our husbands and toddlers. About half of the girls there were pregnant at various stages (we have 6 who are due between Jan 15-Jan 31 alone!).

I can't wait to do another Recipe Exchange in January. I'm thinking something more filling then--like breads, or something.

Well, I didn't have very much time to wait between making the treats and going to the party, so they got a little sticky. This is what the rest looked like after the party.

It started becoming a big ball of green Rice Krispies. Of course, Justin enjoyed the leftovers.
